The Guardian, a British newspaper, has reported that over 2,000 nursing home residents in the UK have died from dehydration and/or malnutrition since 2003. That’s over 200 every year according to the Office for National Statistics.
Dehydration and malnutrition are the less dramatic examples of nursing home neglect and abuse. Incidents of physical abuse (especially when captured on hidden camera) are the most frequently cited examples. Nursing home falls and bed sores are less frequently reported still.
While this evidence is from nursing homes in the United Kingdom, there’s little doubt that dehydration and malnutrition is contributing to the unnecessary and wrongful deaths of American nursing home residents.
Dehydration and malnutrition are contributing factors to bed sores, and the weakness caused by the conditions contributes to nursing home falls. Nursing homes are supposed to record exactly how much food and water each resident consumes every day. If that number is not sufficient, steps need to be taken to determine why.
Nursing home dehydration and malnutrition are often important contributors to other nursing home injuries and even the wrongful death of nursing home residents.
