The undeniable fact of nursing home life is that, for many people, the nursing home is the last place they will ever live. Residents pass away in nursing homes across the country every day. They have heart attacks. They pass from terminal diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and cancer. These things are not preventable.

In the first instance, the Genesis Senior Living resident was found on the floor. Her wheelchair was also tipped over. For two days, she complained of pain, but her physician was not notified until the third day when an Xray revealed that she had fractured her hip in the nursing home fall.
During the ensuing two days, Genesis Senior Living and Rehab staff members repeatedly encouraged her to bear weight on her legs during transfers to her wheelchair and her bed causing her extreme pain.
The second resident developed a bed sore while a resident of the nursing home. The bed sore, also known as a pressure ulcer, was discovered during routine exam. His physician was not notified of the wound. Eight days later, that bed sore was evaluated as a Stage III pressure ulcer by nursing home staff. Still, the physician was not notified.
All told, it was fifteen days before the Genesis Senior Living staff notified the resident’s physician.
