Alzheimer’s Action Day – Wear Purple On September 21 To Show Support For Alzheimer’s Patients

December 24, 2014 Blog Post by Barry G. Doyle

Friday, September 21, has been designated Alzheimer’s Action Day. Wear purple to show support for the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, the Alzheimer’s association is sponsoring two ebay auctions to raise money for the cause.

As a Chicago nursing home lawyer, I have spent countless hours with nursing home residents suffering from all stages of Alzheimer’s disease. It’s a terrible process.

What makes the problem worse is that nursing home residents with Alzheimer’s disease are terribly vulnerable. The short-term memory loss that is most notably associated with the disease can be devastating.

Try to imagine yourself waking up in a hospital setting with absolutely no idea how you came to be there. You may find that you are injured, or have been physically restrained. What would you do?

The answer for many Alzheimer’s residents is the same answer that you or I would give: we would leave, and go home. For many, that action of standing and walking can lead to damaging falls.

Even worse, a nursing home resident with Alzheimer’s disease often loses all credibility with nursing home staff and administration. If they are being mistreated in a nursing home, or if their possessions have been tampered with or stolen, the immediate reaction from nursing home staff is disbelief. They simply assume that you are not aware of what’s happening around you. At my law offices, however, we are experienced investigators who know how to uncover the truth.

Alzheimer’s disease has no cure, but there is some hope. A host of clinical trials is currently underway that may someday lead to a cure.

If you have a loved one who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease in an Illinois nursing home, and you feel they may have been the victims of nursing home abuse or neglect, contact our Chicago nursing home lawyers for a free and confidential evaluation of your case.
