A recent investigation of the Renaissance at Midway nursing home on South Cicero in Chicago revealed multiple residents suffering from bed sores. The investigation, conducted by the Illinois Department of Public Health, uncovered multiple incidents of nursing home neglect that directly contributed to the bed sores.
The details contained in the report show widespread incidents of nursing home neglect. One of the residents was left sitting in his wheelchair from breakfast until after dinner. The sling for the mechanical lift used to transfer him was still underneath him. During wound treatment, a thick white cream only to be used on healthy skin was found slathered into an open bed sore. No one admitted to the act, and the resident’s doctor was never notified.
The wound care nurse assured the inspectors that another resident had no open sores, and, when an open bed sore was found, claimed that “it must have just opened up this morning.”
Another resident’s bed sores had no dressing at all and were not documented. The woman was resting on a low air loss mattress (an appropriate treatment device) but it was not being properly used.
