Nursing Home Fall Results In Fractured Leg At Boulevard Care Nursing Home Chicago, IL

December 24, 2014 Blog Post by Barry G. Doyle

A nursing home fall resulted in a fractured leg for one resident at Boulevard Care Nursing and Rehab in Chicago. The fall was a result of a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) transferring a resident from her wheelchair to her bed.

According to the Boulevard Care statement, the CNA “was in the process of transferring R1 to chair and I sat her up on the side of the bed and turn around to put the sit-to-stand belt on R1 and she moved and started to slide so to prevent her fall I slid her to the floor by her bed.”

The facilities nursing home fall risk assessment for the resident called for two or more persons to physically assist in moving the resident from a wheelchair to a bed.

The CNA who was responsible for the incident was fired for not waiting for another available CNA to assist, but I doubt that will end the problem. A look at the Nursing Home Compare page for Boulevard Care Nursing and Rehab tells a story of a nursing home that’s woefully understaffed.

The Boulevard Care Nursing and Rehab nursing home has 141 residents compared to the average for Illinois: 96. They also have far fewer Registered Nursing hours than the Illinois average.

What really stands out, though, is the hours of CNA care. The average resident in an Illinois nursing home gets over two hours of personal CNA care each day. At the Boulevard Care Nursing and Rehab, a resident receives one hour.

That discrepancy may seem small, but when you consider the large number of residents, it adds up fast. Boulevard Care Nursing and Rehab needs to be staffing over 17 more CNAs each day just to meet the Illinois average!

In other words, the CNA who waits for assistance to transfer a resident from wheelchair to bed might be waiting a very long time. The CNA involved in this incident may have been fired, but the real parties responsible might still be in charge.

One of our core beliefs is that nursing homes are built to fail due to the business model they follow and that unnecessary accidental injuries and wrongful deaths of residents are the inevitable result.  Order our FREE report, Built to Fail, to learn more about why.  Our experienced Chicago nursing home lawyers are ready to help you understand what happened, why, and what your rights are.  Contact us to get the help you need.
