Shattered Leg And Hip Fracture Ignored Despite Many Warnings At Bryan Manor Centralia, Illinois

December 24, 2014 Blog Post by Barry G. Doyle

A truly appalling incident transpired earlier this year at the Bryan Manor nursing home in Centralia, Illinois. The result of the investigation was a $12,500 fine which is uncommonly high for an incident that did not result in a wrongful death. When one considers the level of egregious nursing home neglect that occurred, however, the decision to levy the large fine becomes quite evident.

For two weeks, a resident of the Bryan Manor nursing home in Centralia suffered with a leg that was shattered during a botched nursing home transfer. Two direct support personnel (DSP) were scheduled to assist with the resident’s bath. When they tried to lift the resident, they heard a pop. “We were both scared and did not tell the nurse. We should have, but we didn’t.”

That action, in itself, is a horrendous act of nursing home neglect. Whether or not the two DSPs were aware of the widespread damage caused by their actions is debatable. Their mistake was compounded over and over by Bryan Manor nurses who repeatedly ignored reports from other DSPs that there was something wrong with the resident’s leg.

From 4/11 to 4/22, no less than nine Byron Manor DSPs reported their concern, and yet no action was taken. The testimony from these DSPs is difficult to read. Repeatedly, nurses were asked to evaluate the leg and were unable or unwilling to see the damage. Damage that was obvious to the minimally trained DSPs at Bryan Manor.

When the resident was finally admitted into the hospital, the X-rays revealed that the damage was extensive. The resident sustain a fracture of the femur and a serious hip fracture. The bones were completely shattered and displaced.
