Nursing Home Falls Continue at Claridge Healthcare Center in Lake Bluff

December 24, 2014 Blog Post by Barry G. Doyle

A failure to properly identify and evaluate the causes of nursing home falls has caused the residents of the Claridge Healthcare Center in Lake Bluff, Illinois to live in a demonstrably dangerous environment. Three residents of the facility have suffered dangerous injuries as a result of this nursing home neglect.

  1. The first resident has been diagnosed with dementia and a form of arthritis. She experienced multiple nursing home falls at the Claridge Healthcare Center before finally striking her head hard enough to cause a subdural hematoma. Nursing home reports indicated she fell from her bed, tripped over a roommate’s walker, and was found on the floor several times.
  2. The second Clairidge Healthcare Center resident is deaf and mute with poor vision. His hip was fractured following a nursing home fall. He was readmitted to the facility and fell again ten days later. After another hospital stay he was readmitted to Claridge Healthcare Center again and fell just four days after that admission.
  3. The third resident to experience multiple falls at the Claridge Healthcare Center fell four times over the course of two months. One fall resulted in a swelling “the size of a baseball” on the back of her head.

Nursing homes are required to conduct investigations after every fall and develop interventions that can prevent further nursing home falls from occurring. Clairidge Healthcare failed to properly investigate the nursing home falls, and failed to put interventions in place that could stop the falls from recurring.

Nursing home falls are extremely dangerous not only because of the damage caused by the immediate fall, but also because of the weakened state the fall leaves a resident in. Infections, bed sores, and additional falls all become much more likely after a nursing home resident has been injured.
